History of the Japan National Team: The Samurai Blue, from the J.League to the 2026 World Cup

Record Asian Cup winners, eight consecutive World Cups and conquerors of Germany and Spain in 2022: Japan have established themselves within three decades as the benchmark of Asian football. In 2026 they again came through the group stage before narrowly falling to Brazil.

1. Remarkable Olympic Beginnings (1921–1991)

The Japan Football Association was founded in 1921. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Japan caused a sensation by beating Sweden 3–2 after trailing 2–0: the "Miracle of Berlin". The high point of the amateur era came at the 1968 Mexico City Games with a bronze medal and the top scorer's title for Kunishige Kamamoto. But football remained far behind baseball in Japanese hearts.

2. The J.League and the "Agony of Doha" (1992–1997)

Japan won their first Asian Cup in 1992, then launched the J.League in 1993, a professional championship that attracted stars such as Zico and Gary Lineker and transformed the sport's popularity. That same year, qualification for the 1994 World Cup slipped away in the final seconds against Iraq: the stoppage-time equaliser is remembered as the "Agony of Doha".

3. France 1998, the 2002 World Cup and Asian Dominance (1998–2011)

Japan played their first World Cup in 1998 and have not missed one since. In 2002 they co-hosted the tournament with South Korea and reached the round of 16 for the first time. They won the Asian Cup in 2000, 2004 and 2011, taking their record to four continental titles. Hidetoshi Nakata, then Shunsuke Nakamura and Keisuke Honda, were the figureheads.

4. Rostov, then Victories over Germany and Spain (2018–2025)

In 2018 Japan led Belgium 2–0 in the round of 16 before losing 3–2 in the dying seconds. In Qatar in 2022, under Hajime Moriyasu, they produced a stunning feat by beating Germany and then Spain, both 2–1, to top their group, before going out on penalties to Croatia. Driven by a generation playing almost entirely in Europe — Takefusa Kubo, Kaoru Mitoma, Wataru Endo — Japan became in March 2025 the first nation to qualify (apart from the hosts) for the 2026 World Cup.

5. The 2026 World Cup

Ranked eighteenth by FIFA, Japan finished second in Group F, behind the Netherlands and ahead of Sweden and Tunisia, with one win and two draws, unbeaten. In the round of 32, on 29 June 2026 in Houston, they faced Brazil and lost only 1–2 after a tight match. It was Japan's eighth consecutive World Cup and their fourth knockout-stage appearance in the last five editions.

6. Towards 2030: The Quarter-Final Dream

Since resuming in September 2026, Japan have pursued the objective that still eludes them: reaching a World Cup quarter-final for the first time. With a renowned development model, a solid J.League and a growing number of players at Europe's biggest clubs, the Samurai Blue have never looked closer to that milestone.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Honours: four Asian Cups (1992, 2000, 2004, 2011), a continental record, and a bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where Kunishige Kamamoto finished as the tournament's top scorer. Present at every World Cup since 1998, Japan co-hosted the 2002 edition with South Korea and beat both Germany and Spain at the 2022 tournament. Tokyo's National Stadium and Saitama Stadium 2002 are its flagship venues. Kamamoto, the national team's all-time leading scorer, Hidetoshi Nakata, Shunsuke Nakamura, Keisuke Honda, captain Makoto Hasebe and Yasuhito Endō, the most-capped player, form its pantheon, and the dressing room left spotless after each match has become a symbol of the Samurai Blue.
