History of Manchester United: Munich, the 1999 Treble and the Rebuild

Twenty English league titles, three European Cups and a unique treble in 1999: Manchester United are among the most decorated and most followed clubs on the planet. After a difficult decade, they have begun a deep overhaul of their sporting model.

1. From the Newton Heath Railwaymen to Old Trafford (1878–1944)

The club was founded in 1878 by workers at the Newton Heath railway depot, as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. On the brink of bankruptcy in 1902, it was rescued by a group of local investors and renamed Manchester United. A first league title followed in 1908, a first FA Cup in 1909, and then the move in 1910 to Old Trafford, later nicknamed the "Theatre of Dreams".

2. Matt Busby, the Busby Babes and the Munich Disaster (1945–1967)

Appointed in 1945, Matt Busby built an exceptionally young team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", champions in 1956 and 1957. On 6 February 1958, the aircraft bringing the team home from a European tie in Belgrade crashed on take-off in Munich: twenty-three people lost their lives, including eight players. Busby, severely injured, survived and patiently rebuilt the club with the help of survivors such as Bobby Charlton.

3. The Holy Trinity and the 1968 European Cup (1968–1985)

Ten years after Munich, on 29 May 1968 at Wembley, Manchester United beat Benfica 4–1 after extra time to become the first English club to win the European Cup. The team was driven by the "Holy Trinity": Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law, all three Ballon d'Or winners. Two difficult decades followed, including relegation in 1974.

4. The Ferguson Era: England's Greatest Dynasty (1986–2013)

Appointed in 1986, Sir Alex Ferguson took six years to win his first major trophy — and then never stopped for two decades. He won thirteen Premier League titles and thirty-eight trophies in all, drawing on Eric Cantona, the "Class of 92" (Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, the Neville brothers), then Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

The absolute summit came on 26 May 1999 at the Camp Nou. Trailing Bayern Munich 1–0 in the 90th minute of the Champions League final, United scored twice in stoppage time through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær to complete a league, FA Cup and Champions League treble, the first in English football history. A third European crown followed in Moscow in 2008, on penalties against Chelsea. The twentieth domestic title, in 2013, was Ferguson's last.

5. After Ferguson: A Decade of Instability (2013–2024)

Ferguson's departure opened the most difficult period in the club's modern history. Six managers came and went in ten years. United still won the Europa League in 2017 and FA Cups in 2016 and 2024, but never came close to the domestic title again. In 2024 Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group acquired a minority stake carrying control of football operations, and launched a complete reorganisation of the club's structure.

6. The Rebuild in Progress (2024–2026)

Appointed in late 2024, the Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim was tasked with establishing a lasting playing identity and refreshing a squad long assembled through successive changes of direction. The 2024–25 season had been the club's hardest since the Premier League was created, punctuated by a Europa League final lost to Tottenham.

The 2025–26 season belonged to that rebuilding phase, without a place in the Champions League knockout rounds, won that year by Paris Saint-Germain. In England the title went to Arsenal, the first London champions since 2004, while Manchester City won the FA Cup at Wembley.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Returning to the Summit

Since the restart, Manchester United have pursued a rebuild designed across several seasons: an overhaul of recruitment, investment in the Carrington academy — which supplied at least one home-grown player to every matchday squad for more than four thousand consecutive fixtures — and plans to modernise Old Trafford. With twenty domestic titles, the club remains level with Liverpool at the top of the English honours list: reclaiming that record outright is now the objective.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Main honours: twenty English championships, thirteen FA Cups, six League Cups, three European Cups and Champions Leagues (1968, 1999, 2008), one Europa League (2017), one Cup Winners' Cup (1991), one UEFA Super Cup (1991), one Intercontinental Cup (1999) and one Club World Cup (2008). Old Trafford, with more than seventy-four thousand seats, is the largest club stadium in the United Kingdom.

The legends: Ryan Giggs holds the appearance record and Wayne Rooney the scoring record, ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton. Duncan Edwards, lost at Munich, George Best, Denis Law, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo, 2008 Ballon d'Or winner in a United shirt, complete the Red Devils' pantheon.

Rivalries and identity: clashes with Liverpool — the greatest rivalry in English football — the Manchester derby against City and the historic feud with Leeds shape the club's history. The Munich clock on the stadium, stopped at the time of the 1958 disaster, and the Munich memorial remind every visitor of the tragedy that shaped the club's soul. Statues of the "Holy Trinity" of Best, Law and Charlton, and of Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson, stand around Old Trafford, and the club's global following, built through decades of European football and televised success, is among the largest of any sports team in the world.
