Olympique Lyonnais

History of Olympique Lyonnais: Seven Straight Titles, a Model Academy and Queens of Europe

Holders of the record for consecutive French league titles, developers of whole generations of international players and home to Europe's most decorated women's team, Olympique Lyonnais wrote one of the finest chapters in French football in just a few decades.

1. Born in 1950, and the Coupes de France (1950–1986)

Olympique Lyonnais were born in 1950, when the football section of Lyon Olympique Universitaire became independent. The club settled at the Stade de Gerland and adopted red, blue and white. It won its first trophies with the Coupes de France of 1964, 1967 and 1973, driven by Fleury Di Nallo, the club's all-time leading scorer, but the league title eluded them for half a century.

2. Jean-Michel Aulas and the Building of a Model (1987–2001)

In 1987, with the club in the second division, entrepreneur Jean-Michel Aulas became president. He set a course: to make Lyon a European club through rigorous management and a high-performing academy. The club was promoted in 1989, established itself in Ligue 1 and developed players such as Florian Maurice and Ludovic Giuly.

3. Seven Consecutive Titles: A French Record (2002–2008)

In 2002 Lyon finally won the first French championship in their history. It was the start of unprecedented dominance: seven consecutive titles from 2002 to 2008, a record still unmatched. Under Jacques Santini, Paul Le Guen, Gérard Houllier and Alain Perrin, with free-kick wizard Juninho Pernambucano, Sidney Govou, Grégory Coupet, Michael Essien, Florent Malouda and academy graduate Karim Benzema, OL became a European reference and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2010.

4. The Groupama Stadium and Youth Development (2009–2021)

The club kept faith with its academy, producing Alexandre Lacazette, Nabil Fekir, Corentin Tolisso, Samuel Umtiti, Houssem Aouar and Rayan Cherki. In 2016 it opened its own stadium, the Groupama Stadium, in Décines. It reached the 2017 Europa League semi-finals and another Champions League semi-final in 2020 after eliminating Juventus and Manchester City. Meanwhile OL Féminin, with Ada Hegerberg, Wendie Renard and Amandine Henry, became Europe's best side with eight Women's Champions Leagues, an all-time record.

5. New Ownership and Turbulence (2022–2025)

In 2022 Jean-Michel Aulas sold the club to American businessman John Textor. The following years brought serious financial difficulties: in June 2025 the French financial watchdog (DNCG) ordered an administrative relegation to Ligue 2, a decision eventually overturned on appeal early that summer. On the pitch, Lyon played a memorable Europa League quarter-final against Manchester United in April 2025, lost after extra time.

6. The 2025–26 Season

The 2025–26 season was devoted to sporting and financial stabilisation. Ligue 1 was won by Paris Saint-Germain for the fifth straight year, ahead of RC Lens, who also won the Coupe de France.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Back to the Front Rank

Since the restart, Olympique Lyonnais have relied on what has always been their strength: one of the best academies in France, a modern stadium they own, and a winning culture inherited from the years of dominance. The objective is clear: to return durably to the European places and rekindle the ambition that made Lyon one of the continent's great clubs.

Honours, Stadiums and Legends

Main honours: seven French championships (2002 to 2008), five Coupes de France (1964, 1967, 1973, 2008, 2012), one League Cup (2001) and eight Trophées des Champions. The women's section, OL Lyonnes, has won eight Champions Leagues and an unmatched run of national titles. After sixty-five years at the Stade de Gerland, designed by architect Tony Garnier, the club has played since 2016 at the Groupama Stadium, holding nearly sixty thousand spectators.

The legends: Fleury Di Nallo remains the club's all-time leading scorer. Serge Chiesa, Bernard Lacombe, Sonny Anderson, Juninho Pernambucano, scorer of dozens of free-kick goals, Grégory Coupet, Sidney Govou, Karim Benzema, the future 2022 Ballon d'Or winner, and Alexandre Lacazette, who returned as captain, have all left their mark on the Gones' history.

Rivalry and identity: the Rhône derby against AS Saint-Étienne is one of the fiercest in France. The nickname "les Gones", Lyon slang for the city's kids, reflects the club's deep local roots, and the lion on the crest echoes the city's coat of arms. During the seven-title era, Lyon also became a pioneer in European football business, floating on the stock exchange in 2007 and building one of the most profitable player-trading models of its time, before investing heavily in women's football long before most major clubs.
