History of the Bundesliga: Terrace Culture and the Bavarian Machine

The league of safe standing, the cheapest season tickets in Europe and the highest attendances in world football, the Bundesliga has combined a unique social model with sporting excellence since 1963. In 2025–26 Bayern Munich produced a record-breaking campaign: 122 goals and a domestic double.

1. Before 1963: Sixty Years of Championship Play-Offs

Germany crowned its first national champion in 1903 (VfB Leipzig), through a final tournament contested by the winners of the regional leagues. That system survived six decades: Schalke 04 dominated the 1930s with seven titles, while pre-war Nuremberg amassed nine. In 1954 West Germany stunned the world by winning the World Cup against Hungary — the "Miracle of Bern" — yet football remained officially amateur and the best players left for foreign leagues. The federation eventually relented.

2. The Birth of the Bundesliga and its Golden Age (1963–1990)

The Bundesliga kicked off on 24 August 1963 with sixteen clubs chosen on sporting, financial and geographical criteria. 1. FC Köln were the first champions. Bayern Munich, absent at the start, were promoted only in 1965 — with Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Sepp Maier. The 1970s produced one of the finest rivalries in the game's history: Bayern against the Borussia Mönchengladbach of Günter Netzer and Berti Vogts, who shared ten titles in twelve years. Bayern won three consecutive European Cups (1974, 1975, 1976); Hamburg added another in 1983. The 1971 match-fixing scandal had meanwhile shaken the league and forced a tightening of its rules.

3. Reunification, the 50+1 Model and European Thunder (1991–2009)

German reunification brought the former East German clubs into the system in 1991. The following decade was defined by the 50+1 rule, which guarantees club members a majority of voting rights and prevents any single investor taking control: this is the foundation of the Bundesliga's identity — affordable tickets, retained standing terraces and the highest average attendances in world football, symbolised by Borussia Dortmund's "Yellow Wall" and its 25,000 standing supporters. On the pitch, Dortmund won the Champions League in 1997 and Bayern took the 2001 edition in a nerve-shredding final at San Siro.

4. Bayern's Hegemony and the Dortmund Counter-Model (2010–2023)

Jürgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund, built on Gegenpressing and youth development, broke Bavarian dominance in 2011 and 2012 and reached the 2013 Champions League final — lost at Wembley to Bayern, in a season when the Munich club completed a historic treble under Jupp Heynckes. There followed the longest run of dominance in modern European football: eleven consecutive Bayern titles between 2013 and 2023, punctuated in 2020 by a sextuple under Hansi Flick. RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen established themselves as regular challengers.

5. Leverkusen Break the Cycle, Bayern Reclaim Control (2024–2025)

In 2024 Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen achieved the extraordinary: a first championship in the club's history, secured across a Bundesliga season without a single defeat, ending both decades of mockery and Bayern's streak. Munich responded immediately, taking their title back in 2025.

6. The 2025–26 Season: A Record Campaign for Bayern

The sixty-third Bundesliga season, played from 22 August 2025 to 16 May 2026, became a demonstration of force. Bayern Munich were crowned as early as 19 April 2026, with four matches to spare, after a 4–2 win over VfB Stuttgart: a thirty-fourth Bundesliga title and a thirty-fifth German championship overall.

Above all, the club shattered its own single-season scoring record — 101 goals in 1971–72 — finishing on 122 goals, an average of 3.59 per match. That total is the second highest in the history of Europe's five major leagues, behind only Torino's 125 in 1947–48, scored across six additional fixtures. Bayern completed the double on 23 May 2026 at Berlin's Olympiastadion, beating Stuttgart 3–0 in the DFB-Pokal final: a record twenty-first German Cup, and their first since 2020.

The Champions League run was spectacular: 10–2 against Atalanta in the round of 16, 6–4 against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, then an astonishing semi-final lost 6–5 on aggregate to eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. Leverkusen fell to Arsenal, and Dortmund went out in the play-off round.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Rebuilding the Mannschaft

The new season opens on a striking contrast. While German clubs are thriving, the national team endured a catastrophic 2026 World Cup: four-time world champions Germany were eliminated in the round of 32, beaten on penalties (1–1, 3–4) by Paraguay on 29 June 2026 in Foxborough. Rebuilding the Mannschaft has become a national priority, while the Bundesliga retains what makes it unique: full stadiums, accessible tickets, a preserved supporter culture and resolutely attacking football.
