History of Newcastle United: The Magpies, St James' Park and the End of a Long Wait

A one-club city with unmatched fervour, Newcastle lived glory in the early twentieth century, the euphoria of the "Entertainers" in the 1990s and, in 2025, a first major domestic trophy in seventy years.

1. A Merger and a First Golden Age (1892–1930)

Newcastle United were born in 1892 from the union of two rival city clubs, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, and settled at St James' Park, in the heart of the city. The club adopted the black and white that earned the nickname Magpies. The early twentieth century was its first golden age: champions of England in 1905, 1907 and 1909, then in 1927, and FA Cup winners in 1910 and 1924.

2. Jackie Milburn and Three FA Cups (1946–1969)

The post-war years were dominated by local legend Jackie Milburn, whose goals delivered three FA Cups in five years (1951, 1952, 1955). In 1969 Newcastle won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, forerunner of the UEFA Cup and their only major European trophy.

3. Keegan and the "Entertainers" (1992–1997)

On the brink of relegation to the third tier in the early 1990s, the club handed the job to Kevin Keegan, a former crowd idol. He took them back to the Premier League and built the most thrilling team in England, nicknamed the "Entertainers", with David Ginola, Les Ferdinand and Faustino Asprilla. In 1996 the Magpies led the league by as many as twelve points before being overhauled by Manchester United. That same year local hero Alan Shearer joined for a world-record fee; he would become the club's all-time leading scorer.

4. Bobby Robson, then Difficult Years (1999–2021)

Under Sir Bobby Robson, Newcastle returned to the Champions League in the early 2000s. A long period of instability followed, with two relegations (2009 and 2016), each followed by immediate promotion. The St James' Park crowd, among the most loyal in Europe, never wavered.

5. The 2021 Takeover and the 2025 Trophy

In October 2021 a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund bought the club. Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle qualified for the 2023–24 Champions League. On 16 March 2025 at Wembley, the Magpies beat Liverpool 2–1 in the League Cup final: their first major domestic trophy since 1955, seventy years of waiting erased in a city in celebration.

6. The 2025–26 Season: The Champions League

In the 2025–26 Champions League, Newcastle crushed Qarabağ 9–3 on aggregate in the play-offs before falling in the round of 16 to FC Barcelona, the eventual Spanish champions (3–8 on aggregate). The season also marked the return of the Tyne–Wear derby to the Premier League for the first time since 2015–16, thanks to Sunderland's promotion. The league title went to Arsenal.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Consolidating a New Status

Since the restart, Newcastle have pursued an ambitious project: establishing themselves durably near the top of the table and winning a first league title since 1927. With the resources of their owners, a squad built over several seasons and a St James' Park still sold out every week, the Magpies have every lever to write a new chapter in their history.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Main honours: four English championships (1905, 1907, 1909, 1927), six FA Cups (1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952, 1955), one League Cup (2025) and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (1969). The club plays at St James' Park, one of the largest stadiums in England with more than fifty-two thousand seats, perched on a hill in the city centre and visible from across the whole urban area.

The legends: local hero Alan Shearer holds the club scoring record with two hundred and six goals, ahead of Jackie Milburn, whose statue watches over the stadium, as do those of Shearer and Sir Bobby Robson. Scotland's Hughie Gallacher, captain of the 1927 champions, Kevin Keegan, Peter Beardsley, academy product Paul Gascoigne, David Ginola and, more recently, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak have all shaped the history of the Magpies.

Identity: the black and white striped shirt has been worn since 1894. The supporters, the "Toon Army", are among the most loyal in Europe, filling St James' Park week after week regardless of results, and the Tyne–Wear derby against Sunderland remains one of the most intense fixtures in English football. The club's anthem, "Blaydon Races", a nineteenth-century local folk song, rings out at every home match and has become inseparable from the identity of the city and of Tyneside as a whole.

Rivalries and Supporter Culture

The Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland is one of the oldest and most passionate rivalries in England. Set in the heart of the city, St James' Park rings to "Blaydon Races", the traditional Tyneside anthem, and the "Toon Army" is famous for following the Magpies in huge numbers, at home and across Europe. The black-and-white striped shirt, adopted in 1894, remains one of the most recognisable in English football.
