Primeira Liga

History of the Primeira Liga: The Big Three and Portugal's Talent Factory

The league of the "Três Grandes" — Benfica, Porto and Sporting — the Primeira Liga is one of the most productive talent pools in world football and one of the few European leagues whose clubs have won every major continental competition. In 2025–26 FC Porto reclaimed the crown, and a second-division club caused a sensation in the cup.

1. Origins and the Creation of a National Championship (1922–1945)

Before a national league existed, the Portuguese title was decided from 1922 in the Campeonato de Portugal, a knockout competition between the winners of the regional championships of Lisbon, Porto and elsewhere. A single round-robin championship was trialled in 1934–35 and won by FC Porto; the format became official in 1938–39. Portuguese football was already organised around three institutions founded at the turn of the century: Sport Lisboa e Benfica (1904), Futebol Clube do Porto (1893) and Sporting Clube de Portugal (1906).

2. Benfica, Eusébio and the Conquest of Europe (1946–1975)

Belenenses broke the hierarchy in 1946 — they remain one of only five clubs ever to have been champions of Portugal. But the era belonged to Benfica, who reached the summit of the continent under Hungarian coach Béla Guttmann: back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962, the second won 5–3 against Real Madrid thanks to two goals from a young Mozambican prodigy, Eusébio, later the 1965 Ballon d'Or winner and top scorer at the 1966 World Cup. Guttmann's acrimonious departure gave rise to the legend of the "curse": Benfica have since lost eight European finals without ever winning again. Sporting, for their part, won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1964.

3. The Porto Era and the Mourinho Revolution (1976–2005)

FC Porto established themselves as the third force, then the first: under Artur Jorge they won the 1987 European Cup in Vienna against Bayern Munich, in a match remembered for Rabah Madjer's audacious backheel. Porto then accumulated domestic titles. Between 2002 and 2004 a young coach named José Mourinho produced one of the most remarkable cycles in the game's history: two championships, the 2003 UEFA Cup and above all the 2004 Champions League, won 3–0 against Monaco in Gelsenkirchen. In the meantime Boavista created the ultimate shock by becoming champions in 2001 — the fifth and last club to manage it.

4. The Selling-Club Economy (2006–2020)

The Primeira Liga fully embraced its model: identify, develop, improve and sell. Portuguese academies produced a density of talent unmatched for a country of ten million — Luís Figo, Rui Costa, Cristiano Ronaldo (developed at Sporting), Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes — while the clubs made considerable profits trading in the Brazilian and South American markets. Porto added a Europa League in 2011 under André Villas-Boas, in a domestic season completed without defeat. Benfica dominated the decade at home.

5. Sporting's Awakening and a New Hierarchy (2021–2025)

Sporting CP ended a nineteen-year wait in 2021, then triumphed again in 2024 and 2025 under Rúben Amorim, whose 3-4-3 system captivated all of Europe. The league grew more competitive, with Braga and Vitória Guimarães establishing themselves as regular disruptors.

6. The 2025–26 Season: Porto Reclaim the Crown, Torreense Make History

The ninety-second edition of the Primeira Liga saw FC Porto end Sporting's back-to-back run by taking their thirty-first Portuguese championship, six points clear of the Lisbon side. It marked a major return to the front rank for the northern club.

The Portuguese Cup produced one of the greatest shocks in the country's football history: on 24 May 2026, at the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras, second-division SC Torreense beat Sporting CP 2–1 after extra time. It was the club's first major trophy, the first time a second-tier side had ever won the competition, and an unprecedented ticket to the 2026–27 Europa League league phase. For Sporting it was a third consecutive final lost.

In Europe, Sporting produced the best Portuguese run in the Champions League, eliminating Norway's Bodø/Glimt after extra time in the round of 16 before losing 1–0 to Arsenal in the quarter-finals. Benfica had gone out to Real Madrid in the play-off round.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Portugal Still Exporting

Ranked fifth in the world before the 2026 World Cup, Portugal came through the group stage and beat Croatia 2–1 in the round of 32, before falling to eventual world champions Spain (0–1) in the round of 16. The league, meanwhile, pursues its historic mission: producing, year after year, a remarkable share of the planet's finest players and coaches, while serving up Lisbon derbies and a Porto–Benfica Clássico among the most intense in Europe.
