History of the Colombia National Team: The Cafeteros, from the Olympic Goal to the 2026 World Cup

A country of passion and talent, Colombia have given football unforgettable artists — Valderrama, Higuita, James Rodríguez — and also lived some of its darkest chapters. In 2026 the Cafeteros went out only on penalties to Switzerland in the round of 16.

1. Beginnings and the Olympic Goal of 1962 (1924–1985)

The Colombian Football Federation was founded in 1924. In the 1950s the domestic league, temporarily outside FIFA, attracted stars such as Alfredo Di Stéfano: the era of El Dorado. Colombia played their first World Cup in 1962 in Chile and produced a celebrated feat: 4–1 down to the USSR of legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin, they fought back to draw 4–4. Marcos Coll scored directly from a corner, the only "Olympic goal" ever scored at a World Cup finals.

2. Valderrama's Golden Generation (1986–1998)

Under Francisco Maturana, Colombia became one of the most attractive teams in the world. Around Carlos Valderrama, the playmaker with the legendary hair, eccentric goalkeeper René Higuita and Faustino Asprilla, they returned to the World Cup in 1990. On 5 September 1993 they crushed Argentina 5–0 in Buenos Aires in qualifying, a historic result. But the 1994 World Cup in the United States turned to tragedy: eliminated in the group stage, defender Andrés Escobar, who had scored an own goal, was murdered in Medellín days after returning home. The country and world football were shaken.

3. The 2001 Copa América (1999–2012)

In 2001 Colombia hosted the Copa América and won it without conceding a single goal, beating Mexico 1–0 in the final in Bogotá. It remains their only major continental title. A long World Cup absence followed, from 1998 to 2014.

4. James Rodríguez and Brazil 2014 (2013–2023)

Under José Pékerman, Colombia produced the best run in their history in 2014: a quarter-final in Brazil, lost to the hosts. James Rodríguez won the Golden Boot with six goals, including a volley against Uruguay voted goal of the tournament. The Cafeteros reached the round of 16 again in 2018.

5. The 2024 Final and the 2026 World Cup

Under Néstor Lorenzo, Colombia strung together a long unbeaten run and reached the 2024 Copa América final, lost 1–0 after extra time to Argentina. Ranked thirteenth in the world before the 2026 World Cup, they came through the group stage and beat Ghana 1–0 in the round of 32 on 3 July in Kansas City. In the last 16, on 7 July in Vancouver, they held Switzerland 0–0 before losing on penalties (3–4).

6. Towards 2030

Since resuming in September 2026, Colombia have approached South American qualifying with a squad blending experienced leaders and young talents based in Europe, such as Luis Díaz. Backed by one of the most fervent crowds on the continent and the most recognisable yellow shirt in South America after Brazil's, they are targeting the centenary World Cup.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Honours: the 2001 Copa América, won at home without conceding a single goal; runners-up in 1975 and 2024. At the World Cup, Colombia played in 1962 — when Marcos Coll scored directly from a corner past Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin — 1990, 1994, 1998, 2014, 2018 and 2026; its best result remains the 2014 quarter-final, when James Rodríguez won the Golden Boot with six goals. Barranquilla's Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez, nicknamed "La Arenosa", is its fortress, where heat and humidity have long troubled visiting sides. Carlos "El Pibe" Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla, René Higuita and his "scorpion kick", Andrés Escobar, whose murder in 1994 shocked the football world, and Radamel Falcao, the national team's all-time leading scorer, form its pantheon.
