History of Al-Hilal SFC: The Giant of Riyadh, King of Asia and Conqueror of Manchester City
The most decorated club in Saudi Arabia and Asia and record winners of the AFC Champions League, Al-Hilal have established themselves as the benchmark of the continent's football. In 2025 they produced one of the greatest feats in their history by knocking Manchester City out of the Club World Cup.
1. Foundation and a Royal Name (1957–1976)
The club was founded on 16 October 1957 in Riyadh as the Olympic Club. The following year King Saud gave it its current name, Al-Hilal — "the crescent". The club adopted blue and white and quickly became one of the great forces of fledgling Saudi football, in a rivalry with Al-Nassr, the capital's other giant, in the famous Riyadh derby.
2. National Rise and Foreign Stars (1977–1999)
First champions of Saudi Arabia when the national league was created in 1977, Al-Hilal attracted famous names, including Brazilian Rivelino, a 1970 world champion, and coach Mário Zagallo. They won their first Asian Club Championship in 1991 and a second in 2000, along with several Asian Cup Winners' Cups and Super Cups. Sami Al-Jaber, one of the greatest Saudi players, was the emblem.
3. King of Asia (2000–2022)
In the twenty-first century Al-Hilal became the continent's most decorated club. They won the AFC Champions League in 2019 and 2021, taking their total to four continental titles, a record. At the 2022 Club World Cup in Morocco they beat South American champions Flamengo, then lost 5–3 to Real Madrid in the final after a spectacular match, becoming one of the few Asian clubs to reach that stage.
4. Neymar and the Record Season (2023–2024)
As part of the transformation of Saudi football, the club signed Neymar, Aleksandar Mitrović, Rúben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly and Sergej Milinković-Savić in 2023. Under Jorge Jesus, Al-Hilal produced a historic 2023–24 season: unbeaten champions and a run of thirty-four consecutive wins, recognised as a world record. It was their nineteenth national title.
5. 2025: The Upset Against Manchester City
Qualified for the first thirty-two-team Club World Cup in the United States, Al-Hilal, now coached by Italian Simone Inzaghi, held Real Madrid in the group stage, then produced in the round of 16 one of the greatest feats in Asian football history: a 4–3 win after extra time over Manchester City. They were then eliminated in the quarter-finals by Brazil's Fluminense.
6. The 2025–26 Season and Beyond
In 2025–26 the Saudi league was won by rivals Al-Nassr, and the AFC Champions League Elite by Al-Ahli, who retained their title. Al-Hilal look ahead with the ambition of reclaiming the domestic crown and adding a fifth continental title, as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. The club plays at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
