History of Paris Saint-Germain: From a Public Subscription to Back-to-Back European Titles

Founded in 1970 through a public subscription, Paris Saint-Germain have become within half a century one of the most powerful clubs on the planet. After a first Champions League in 2025, they retained it in 2026 — becoming only the second club to achieve that double since the competition was rebranded.

1. Founded by Supporters, and the First Trophies (1970–1990)

Paris Saint-Germain were born on 12 August 1970 from the merger of Stade Saint-Germain and Paris FC, in unusual circumstances: the French capital had been without a major top-flight club for years, and the creation of PSG was part-financed by a public subscription that gathered more than twenty thousand subscribers. After separating from Paris FC in 1972, the club climbed back through the divisions and settled at the Parc des Princes in 1974. The 1980s brought the first trophies: the Coupe de France in 1982 and 1983, then a first French championship in 1986, driven by Safet Sušić and Luis Fernandez.

2. The Canal+ Era and European Glory (1991–1998)

The takeover by broadcaster Canal+ in 1991 transformed the club. Under Artur Jorge and then Luis Fernandez, with George Weah, Raí, David Ginola, Youri Djorkaeff and Bernard Lama, PSG lived their first great period: French champions in 1994, winners of the 1996 Cup Winners' Cup (1–0 against Rapid Vienna in Brussels) — their first European trophy — and European semi-finalists in six consecutive seasons, a consistency then unmatched in France. A more uneven decade followed, marked by domestic cups and the brief passage of a young Ronaldinho.

3. Qatar Sports Investments: A Change of Scale (2011–2020)

In 2011 Qatar Sports Investments bought the club and upended the economics of French football. Zlatan Ibrahimović, Thiago Silva and then Edinson Cavani arrived; PSG were champions in 2013 and would rarely relinquish the title. The signings of Neymar for €222 million and Kylian Mbappé in 2017 made up the largest transfer window in history. But Europe resisted: the "remontada" suffered against Barcelona in 2017 and the 2020 Champions League final lost to Bayern fed a lasting frustration.

4. The Shift: From a Galaxy of Stars to a Team (2021–2024)

After Lionel Messi's spell and the successive departures of the biggest names, the club made a major strategic turn: fewer individual stars, more young talent, a coherent playing project and unapologetic collective intensity. The Parc des Princes found a team built on pressing and speed, with Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Barcola.

5. 2025: A First European Star

The gamble paid off in Munich in May 2025: Paris Saint-Germain crushed Inter Milan 5–0 in the final to win the first Champions League in their history, by the largest margin ever recorded in a final of the competition. The club added the FIFA Intercontinental Cup that same year, having reached the final of the first expanded Club World Cup, lost 3–0 to Chelsea in July 2025.

6. The 2025–26 Season: A European Double and a Fourteenth Title

The following season confirmed their dominance. Domestically, PSG were crowned French champions for a fifth consecutive year with a match to spare, through a 2–0 win over closest rivals RC Lens on 13 May 2026: their fourteenth national title, a record they keep extending.

The defining achievement came on 30 May 2026 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Having eliminated Monaco in the play-offs, Chelsea (8–2), Liverpool (4–0) and then Bayern Munich in an astonishing semi-final (6–5 on aggregate), PSG faced Arsenal in the final. After a 1–1 draw, the Parisians won 4–3 on penalties and retained their title: they became only the second club to win consecutive European crowns since the Champions League format was introduced, after Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. On 12 August 2026 in Salzburg they added the UEFA Super Cup, beating Aston Villa 2–1.

The season's one false note: a surprise exit in the last 32 of the Coupe de France, against neighbours Paris FC.

7. Looking to 2026–27: Building a Dynasty

Since the restart, Paris Saint-Germain have entered the season with an unfamiliar status: that of a European benchmark. The club continues to develop its academy, its facilities at the PSG Campus in Poissy and its global brand, while defending on the pitch a domestic dominance unbroken for five years. The stated objective is now to write the name of Paris durably among European football's dynasties.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Main honours: fourteen French championships (a record), sixteen Coupes de France (a record), nine League Cups, two Champions Leagues (2025, 2026), one Cup Winners' Cup (1996), two UEFA Super Cups and one Intercontinental Cup (2025). The Parc des Princes, in its current form designed by architect Roger Taillibert and opened in 1972, holds almost forty-eight thousand spectators. Kylian Mbappé became the club's all-time leading scorer, and iconic captain Marquinhos holds the appearance record. Safet Sušić, Raí, George Weah, Pauleta, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Thiago Silva complete the Parisian pantheon. Le Classique against Olympique de Marseille remains the most-watched fixture in French football.
