History of the Canada National Team: From the Olympic Pioneers of 1904 to a Home World Cup in 2026

Long overshadowed by ice hockey, Canadian soccer enjoyed a spectacular rise in the twenty-first century. Co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, Canada produced the best run in their history by reaching the round of 16.

1. Olympic Gold as Early as 1904

The Canadian Soccer Association was founded in 1912, but Canadian football had already made its mark: at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, Galt FC, representing Canada, won the gold medal in the football tournament. For most of the twentieth century, however, the sport remained in the shadow of ice hockey.

2. Mexico 1986: The First World Cup

Canada qualified for their first World Cup in 1986 in Mexico. Drawn against France, Hungary and the USSR, they failed to score but gave a creditable account of themselves with a largely semi-professional squad. They then had to wait thirty-six years to return.

3. The 2000 Gold Cup and the Development Years (1987–2019)

In 2000 Canada sprang a surprise by winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup, beating Mexico in the quarter-finals along the way. The arrival in MLS of Toronto FC (2007), the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Montreal Impact, then the creation of the Canadian Premier League in 2019, finally gave structure to player development. The women's team, Olympic champions in 2021, showed the way.

4. The Davies Generation and the Return to the World Cup (2020–2025)

An exceptional generation emerged around Alphonso Davies, who arrived in Canada as a child refugee, and Jonathan David. Canada topped CONCACAF qualifying for the 2022 World Cup and returned after thirty-six years; Davies scored against Croatia the first World Cup goal in Canada's history. In 2024, under Jesse Marsch, the team reached the Copa América semi-finals at their first attempt.

5. The 2026 World Cup: The Best Run in Their History

Co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, with Toronto and Vancouver as host cities, Canada — ranked thirtieth — came through the group stage for the first time. In the round of 32, on 28 June 2026 in Inglewood, they beat South Africa 1–0, winning their first World Cup knockout match. In the last 16, on 4 July in Houston, they lost 0–3 to Morocco, the eventual quarter-finalists.

6. Towards 2030

Since resuming in September 2026, Canada have begun their new cycle with the legacy of a historic World Cup: modernised infrastructure, unprecedented public enthusiasm and a generation that has proved it can compete with the best. The aim now is to establish themselves durably among the nations that qualify for every World Cup.

Honours, Stadium and Legends

Honours: Olympic gold in 1904 in St. Louis, won by Galt FC representing the country; the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000; a Copa América semi-final in 2024 on its first appearance. At the World Cup, Canada played in 1986, 2022 — when Alphonso Davies scored the country's first-ever World Cup goal against Croatia — and 2026, which it co-hosted with the United States and Mexico, with matches at Toronto's BMO Field and Vancouver's BC Place. Dwayne De Rosario, Atiba Hutchinson, long the most-capped men's player, Julian de Guzman, Christine Sinclair — the all-time leading scorer in international football, men or women — Cyle Larin and Jonathan David are the great figures of Canadian football. The work of John Herdman and then Jesse Marsch transformed a long-marginal team into a nation that counts in CONCACAF, while the growth of MLS clubs in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal and of the Canadian Premier League, founded in 2019, has given young players a professional pathway at home.
