History of the Germany National Team: Four Stars, Die Mannschaft and the Disappointment of 2026

Four-time world champions and three-time European champions, Germany are the most consistent national side in football history, with nineteen major-tournament semi-finals. But after three consecutive early World Cup exits, including 2026, Die Mannschaft must reinvent itself.

1. Beginnings and the Building of a Culture (1900–1953)

The German Football Association (DFB) was founded in Leipzig in 1900. The national team played its first official match in 1908 against Switzerland (a 5–3 defeat). Germany reached third place at the 1934 World Cup, but the Second World War abruptly halted their development: excluded from international competition, West Germany were only readmitted to FIFA in 1950.

2. The Miracle of Bern: The Birth of a Sporting Nation (1954–1970)

On 4 July 1954 at the Wankdorf in Bern, West Germany faced Puskás's Hungary, unbeaten for four years and considered invincible. Two goals down after eight minutes, Sepp Herberger's team, led by captain Fritz Walter, turned the match around to win 3–2 through Helmut Rahn's decisive strike. This "Miracle of Bern" transcended sport entirely: in a still-scarred Germany, it acted as a founding moment of national reconstruction. A final lost to England in 1966 followed, then the 1970 semi-final against Italy (3–4 after extra time), nicknamed the "Game of the Century".

3. Beckenbauer, Müller and the Golden Age (1972–1990)

The European champions of 1972 are often cited among the finest teams ever assembled: Franz Beckenbauer invented the modern sweeper role, Günter Netzer orchestrated, Gerd Müller scored. Two years later West Germany won the 1974 World Cup on home soil, beating the Netherlands of Total Football 2–1, with Müller scoring the decisive goal. After two lost World Cup finals in 1982 and 1986, Germany triumphed again on 8 July 1990 in Rome, 1–0 against Argentina through an Andreas Brehme penalty. Beckenbauer became the first man to win the World Cup as captain and then as manager.

4. Reunification, Crisis and Historic Reform (1991–2005)

German reunification brought former East German players into the squad. Germany won Euro 1996 at Wembley through Oliver Bierhoff's golden goal, then reached the 2002 World Cup final. But group-stage exits at Euro 2000 and Euro 2004 triggered radical soul-searching. The DFB obliged professional clubs to establish certified academies and invested heavily in talent identification: the most important reform in the history of German football.

5. The Sommermärchen and the Fourth Star (2006–2016)

The 2006 home World Cup, the "summer fairytale", transformed the country's image and revealed a young, attacking team under Jürgen Klinsmann. Joachim Löw took over and reaped the reform's rewards: third in 2010, then world champions on 13 July 2014 at the Maracanã, 1–0 against Argentina through Mario Götze in the 113th minute. The Brazilian campaign will forever be defined by the most astonishing semi-final in tournament history: a 7–1 demolition of Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

6. The Dark Years and the 2026 World Cup (2018–2026)

The decline was brutal. Defending champions Germany were eliminated in the group stage in 2018, and again in 2022. Euro 2024, hosted at home under Julian Nagelsmann, restored some hope with a closely fought quarter-final against eventual champions Spain.

But the 2026 World Cup ended early once more. Ranked tenth in the world before the tournament, Die Mannschaft came through the group stage before falling in the round of 32: on 29 June 2026 in Foxborough they were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties (1–1, 3–4). It was a third consecutive early World Cup exit for a nation that, between 1954 and 2014, had not left a World Cup before the quarter-finals for more than sixty years.

7. Towards 2030: Rebuilding Die Mannschaft

Since resuming in September 2026, rebuilding the national team has become a national priority. The foundations remain solid: the Bundesliga records the highest attendances in world football, Bayern Munich have just produced a record season with 122 goals and a domestic double, and German academies continue to develop international-class players. The challenge now is to convert the health of the club game into results for a Mannschaft that has not reached a World Cup semi-final since 2014.
