Ligue 1

History of Ligue 1: From Football's Great Academy to PSG's Back-to-Back European Crown

Long regarded as the finest talent factory in world football, Ligue 1 has changed status within a single decade. Its champion, Paris Saint-Germain, became the master of Europe in 2025 and again in 2026, while the French league retains its irreplaceable role as a supplier of talent to the entire planet.

1. The Birth of Professionalism and the Pioneers (1932–1955)

The French professional championship was created in 1932, after a long battle against the defenders of amateurism. Twenty clubs took part in two groups, and Olympique Lillois were the very first champions. Sochaux, backed by the Peugeot factories, along with Sète, Racing Club de Paris and RC Roubaix, shaped those early years. The Second World War interrupted the competition, but French football emerged institutionally stronger: it was French administrators — Jules Rimet for the World Cup, Gabriel Hanot and Jacques Ferran for the European Cup, launched in 1955 from the pages of L'Équipe — who invented modern football's great competitions.

2. Reims, Saint-Étienne and the Epic of Les Verts (1955–1985)

Stade de Reims, with Raymond Kopa and Just Fontaine, carried French colours to two European Cup finals (1956 and 1959), both lost to Real Madrid. Then came the era of AS Saint-Étienne, winners of ten league titles between 1957 and 1981, who set the country alight during the 1975–76 European campaign. The final lost 1–0 to Bayern Munich at Hampden Park — where two Saint-Étienne shots struck the now-legendary square goalposts — remains one of the great popular narratives of French sport. Nantes, with their distinctive passing game, and Bordeaux emerged strongly in the years that followed.

3. The Marseille Decade and France's European Star (1986–1999)

Driven by Bernard Tapie, Olympique de Marseille dominated French football with four consecutive titles between 1989 and 1992, then reached the summit on 26 May 1993 in Munich: a Basile Boli header won OM the Champions League against AC Milan. To this day Marseille remain the only French club to have won Europe's most prestigious competition. The triumph was immediately tarnished by the VA-OM match-fixing affair, which cost the club its 1993 domestic title and brought administrative relegation. Auxerre, under Guy Roux, completed a historic double in 1996.

4. Lyon, French Youth Development and Qatar's Arrival (2000–2015)

Olympique Lyonnais set a record still unmatched with seven consecutive league titles between 2002 and 2008. Ligue 1 distinguished itself through the exceptional quality of its academies — Clairefontaine, Le Havre, Rennes, Lyon, Monaco — which supplied every major European league. In 2011 the purchase of Paris Saint-Germain by Qatar Sports Investments changed the scale of the competition: Paris were champions by 2013 and would rarely relinquish the crown. Montpellier (2012) produced a one-season miracle, and Monaco, inspired by a teenage Kylian Mbappé, triumphed in 2017.

5. Parisian Dominance and the Conquest of Europe (2016–2025)

PSG accumulated domestic titles but long stumbled on the continental stage, notably in the final lost in 2020. Lille sprang a surprise in 2021. The league, reduced to eighteen clubs from 2023–24 to ease the calendar, endured a broadcasting-rights crisis. Then came fulfilment: in May 2025 in Munich, Paris Saint-Germain crushed Inter Milan 5–0 in the final to win their first Champions League, adding the FIFA Intercontinental Cup later the same year.

6. The 2025–26 Season: PSG Enter Legend

The eighty-eighth Ligue 1 season, played from 15 August 2025 to 17 May 2026, saw Paris Saint-Germain retain the title for a fifth consecutive year, with a match to spare, thanks to a 2–0 win over their closest pursuers RC Lens on 13 May 2026. It was the club's fourteenth French championship, a record they continue to extend.

On 30 May 2026, at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, PSG achieved what almost no one had managed: retaining the Champions League. After a 1–1 draw with Arsenal, the Parisians won 4–3 on penalties, becoming only the second club to win back-to-back titles since the competition was rebranded as the Champions League, after Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. They completed the year with the UEFA Super Cup, won 2–1 against Aston Villa on 12 August 2026 in Salzburg.

The domestic season nevertheless delivered a major shock: knocked out in the last 32 of the Coupe de France by neighbours Paris FC, PSG left the trophy to RC Lens, 3–1 winners over Nice in the final for the first Coupe de France in their history.

7. Looking to 2026–27: A French Generation at the Summit

The 2026 World Cup confirmed the depth of French talent. Eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champions Spain (0–2), then beaten 6–4 by England in a spectacular third-place play-off, France finished fourth. Kylian Mbappé scored ten goals and won the Golden Boot, becoming the first player in history to claim the award twice. Ligue 1 therefore opens its new season with a champion now recognised worldwide, and a development system that remains, more than ever, the best in Europe.
