History of the Brazil National Team: Five Stars, Jogo Bonito and the Wake-Up Call of 2026

The only nation to have played in every World Cup and the only five-time world champions, the Seleção have given football its most beautiful images and its most inventive players. Eliminated in the round of 16 in 2026, they are now embarking on a long-awaited rebuild.

1. Beginnings, the Maracanazo and the Birth of the Yellow Shirt (1914–1957)

Brazil played their first official match in 1914 and quickly became a South American power, but it was in 1950 that they lived the event that would define their identity. Hosting the World Cup, Brazil needed only a draw to be crowned. On 16 July 1950, in front of nearly 200,000 people at the Maracanã, Uruguay won 2–1. The Maracanazo became the country's greatest collective trauma. One direct consequence: the white shirt, deemed unlucky, was abandoned. A national competition was launched and in 1953 the young designer Aldyr Garcia Schlee created the yellow shirt with a green collar, today one of the most recognisable sporting symbols in the world.

2. Pelé, Garrincha and the First Three Stars (1958–1970)

In Sweden in 1958, a seventeen-year-old forward named Pelé announced himself to the world: Brazil beat the hosts 5–2 in the final to claim a first world title. Four years later in Chile, Pelé was injured, but Garrincha, a dribbler of genius, carried the team single-handedly to a second triumph. The summit came in Mexico in 1970: the Seleção of Pelé, Jairzinho — who scored in every match of the tournament — Tostão, Gérson, Rivelino and Carlos Alberto is regularly named the finest team ever assembled. Their 4–1 victory over Italy in the final, sealed by a team goal for the ages, allowed them to keep the Jules Rimet trophy permanently. Jogo bonito entered legend.

3. The Sacrificed Generation of 1982 and a Turn to Pragmatism (1974–1994)

The 1982 team, led by Sócrates, Zico, Falcão and Éder, is regarded as the most captivating side never to have won anything: their 3–2 elimination by Paolo Rossi's Italy in Barcelona remains one of football's great regrets. Brazil drew the lessons of twenty-four years without a title and adopted a more disciplined approach. In the 1994 World Cup in the United States, under Carlos Alberto Parreira, with Romário and Bebeto up front and Dunga in midfield, they won a fourth star by beating Italy on penalties — the first final in history decided that way.

4. Ronaldo, the Three Rs and the Fifth Star (1998–2010)

After the 1998 final lost 3–0 to France, in circumstances surrounding Ronaldo's health that were long debated, Brazil took their revenge in Korea and Japan in 2002. Powered by the "three Rs" — Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho — they won every match and beat Germany 2–0 in the final. Ronaldo scored eight goals there, completing one of the great comebacks in sporting history. Brazil became the only nation with five world titles.

5. The Mineirazo and the Years of Doubt (2014–2024)

Hosting the 2014 World Cup, Brazil suffered on 8 July 2014 in Belo Horizonte the most resounding humiliation in their history: a 7–1 semi-final defeat by Germany, the Mineirazo. Consolation came in 2016 with Olympic gold won at the Maracanã through Neymar, then the 2019 Copa América at home. But the major tournaments brought early exits: a quarter-final lost on penalties to Croatia in 2022, and a quarter-final exit at the 2024 Copa América. In 2025 the federation made a statement appointment, handing the national team to Carlo Ancelotti, the most decorated coach in Champions League history.

6. The 2026 World Cup: An Early Exit

Ranked sixth in the world before the tournament, Brazil fell short of expectations in North America. In the round of 32, on 29 June 2026 in Houston, they saw off Japan 2–1 after a difficult match. But on 5 July in East Rutherford the Seleção lost 1–2 to Norway in the round of 16, eliminated by a Scandinavian side returning to the top level after twenty-eight years away.

It was one of Brazil's earliest exits of the twenty-first century, and it extended a wait that has become heavy: the country has now been chasing a sixth star since 2002 — twenty-four years without a world title, the longest drought in their modern history.

7. Towards 2030: Rebuilding Around a New Generation

Since resuming in September 2026, Brazil have begun a thorough rebuild, supported by a domestic league that has become one of the most powerful in the world — Flamengo completed a Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão double in 2025 — and by academies that continue to supply the whole of Europe. With South American qualifiers ahead and then the 2030 World Cup, whose opening will be staged in South America to mark the centenary, the Seleção have a single objective: to reconnect with the title, and with the jogo bonito that made their legend.
