History of the Algeria National Team: The Desert Warriors

The history of Algerian football is deeply intertwined with identity, resilience, and national pride. From its political roots to its fierce battles in international qualifiers and tournament stages, the Fennecs have established themselves as a powerhouse of African football.

1. The Genesis: The FLN Team (1958–1962)

Even before the official establishment of the football federation, the national team was born out of secrecy in April 1958. Sparked by the National Liberation Front (FLN), several Algerian professional players performing in France (including Rachid Mekhloufi and Mustapha Zitouni) left everything behind to create a team that served as an ambassador for the independence movement. This selection played 91 matches worldwide, becoming a powerful symbol of the freedom fight before Algeria's independence in 1962 and official FIFA affiliation in 1963.

2. The Golden Age, Gijón, and the First Continental Crown (1980–1990)

The 1980s marked the rise of a golden generation led by icons such as Lakhdar Belloumi, Rabah Madjer, and Salah Assad. In 1982, Algeria dominated the African qualifiers to secure their first-ever FIFA World Cup spot in Spain. On June 16, 1982, in Gijón, they caused one of the biggest upsets in football history by defeating West Germany 2–1. Although unfairly eliminated following the controversial "Disgrace of Gijón" match between Germany and Austria, the Fennecs proved their status by qualifying again for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. This glorious era culminated in 1990 when Algeria won its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on home soil, defeating Nigeria 1–0.

3. The Revival of Omdurman and the Brazilian Journey (2010–2014)

Following a lengthy rebuilding phase, the ultimate awakening took place during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. After a highly competitive campaign, Antar Yahia scored a legendary volley in a dramatic playoff match against Egypt in Omdurman, Sudan, booking Algeria's ticket to South Africa. The team maintained its momentum by qualifying for back-to-back World Cups in Brazil in 2014. There, Algeria delivered its finest global performance: displaying an exciting, offensive style of play, they reached the round of 16 for the first time, narrowly losing 2–1 after extra time to eventual champions Germany in a heroic effort.

4. The Second Star and the End of a Cycle (2019–2024)

In 2019, managed by Djamel Belmadi and captained by Riyad Mahrez, the Desert Warriors conquered the AFCON tournament in Egypt, claiming their second continental star by defeating Senegal 1–0 in the final and setting a historic 35-match unbeaten run. However, international football brought tough challenges: Algeria suffered a major heartbreak by missing out on the 2022 World Cup in the final seconds of the playoff against Cameroon, followed by disappointing group-stage exits at both the 2021 and 2023 AFCON tournaments, signaling the need for a total squad renovation.

5. Heading to a New Horizon: The 2025–2026 Campaign

The 2025–2026 period highlights a new chapter of renewal for the Greens. Under a new coaching staff and led by a hungry generation of young dual-national talents and domestic stars, Algeria has focused all its energy on the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
