The history of football in Hong Kong is that of an Asian pioneer, built on a century-old tradition and a unique cultural passion. As an early stronghold of continental football, the Hong Kong national team proudly continues to display its growth and ambition on the international stage.
Hong Kong holds one of the oldest football traditions in Asia, with its football association (HKFA) established in 1914 before earning official FIFA affiliation in 1954. In 1956, Hong Kong achieved a historic milestone by hosting and competing in the inaugural edition of the AFC Asian Cup, securing an impressive third-place finish. Throughout this period and up until the 1970s, the territory stood as a respected talent hub and a vital developmental center within Asian football, competing regularly against the continent's top sides.
The history of the national squad is forever defined by the famous exploit of May 19, 1985. During the 1986 World Cup qualifiers, Hong Kong caused a global soccer sensation by defeating China 2–1 in Beijing, a historic fixture deeply embedded in sporting folklore as the "May 19th Miracle." On the regional stage, Hong Kong reinforced its competitive drive multiple times, most notably by winning the gold medal at the 2009 East Asian Games on home soil in front of an ecstatic home crowd, reviving passionate local support.
The 2010s and early 2020s witnessed structural revolutions by the federation to professionalize the domestic league and modernize youth development systems. This long-term strategy was beautifully rewarded in June 2022: ending a 56-year tournament drought, Hong Kong confidently qualified for the final stages of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. At the tournament in Qatar in 2024, despite a group-stage exit, the squad displayed a highly courageous, tactical performance against Asian powerhouses.
Moving forward into the 2025–2026 period, Hong Kong focuses entirely on the decisive AFC qualifying fixtures for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Successfully blending elite naturalized players with promising young talents from the local Premier League, the team utilizes a style built on strong tactical discipline and swift counter-attacks. Backed by intense, proud home support at the Hong Kong Stadium, the Dragons battle fiercely across all qualifying matches to elevate their football standing and compete hard against Asia's elite.
